Opened Moisture-Sensitive Components: Reflow Evidence Review
Prepare labels, exposure history, storage records and applicable handling guidance for assessment of opened moisture-sensitive components before reflow.
Short answer
For opened, leftover or customer-supplied moisture-sensitive components, prepare matched identification, exposure, storage and handling evidence before asking the designated project party to assess an intended reflow batch. Our engineering recommendation is to pause progression toward release when records are missing, conditions conflict or a treatment method remains unconfirmed. Complete records support assessment; they do not establish component qualification, successful treatment or permission to reflow.
Orbbec's glossary defines printed circuit board assembly, abbreviated PCBA, as a fully assembled printed circuit board with electronic components mounted and soldered onto it. This definition supplies terminology for the assembled-board context; it provides no moisture-handling requirement or evidence of Huitai capability. Orbbec, Gemini 305 Datasheet V1.0, 6 January 2026, page 6, Glossary, hosted by DigiKey.
Match the material to its label and guidance
Start with the full orderable part number, manufacturer, package identification and associated original labels. Connect each remaining reel, tray or partial lot to the records that actually describe it. Request the applicable current device and packing documents rather than assuming that a document for a similar package applies.
Texas Instruments' handling report defines floor life as the maximum period from opening the moisture barrier bag to final reflow. It identifies packing labels as sources of moisture sensitivity and floor-life information and points to device information for moisture sensitivity and peak reflow information. These statements concern the covered TI plastic surface-mount integrated-circuit packages; they do not establish values for a supplied project part. Texas Instruments, AN-2029 Handling and Process Recommendations, SNOA550H, revised June 2020, page 3, section 3.
In NXP's covered quad flat no-lead and small outline no-lead package guidance, moisture sensitivity level, abbreviated MSL, indicates the component's floor life, storage conditions and handling precautions after its original container is opened. Floor life describes the permissible period outside the moisture barrier bag before final solder reflow. NXP also describes MSL and maximum allowed peak body temperature information on the caution label. Match the actual part, package and packing information before applying that guidance. NXP, Assembly guidelines for quad flat no-lead and small outline no-lead packages, Rev. 9, 28 April 2021, page 38, section 10.2.
Preserve opening, exposure and storage history
As an engineering recommendation, assemble first and subsequent opening times, individual exposure periods, recorded temperature and humidity, storage transitions, resealing records and previous treatment history. Mark undocumented periods explicitly. Keep those records separate from any proposed exposure calculation.
Texas Instruments describes a humidity indicator card, abbreviated HIC, as a card included with desiccant in the sealed moisture barrier bag of its moisture-sensitive components. Its indication after opening is used in the report to identify excessive moisture, with color interpretation described on the card. Request the actual observation and applicable card instructions; no observation supplied here establishes component moisture content or successful drying. Texas Instruments, SNOA550H, page 3, section 3; page 8, section 7.
STMicroelectronics explains that time and environment affect absorbed moisture and that opening a dry package exposes its contents to the normal environment. Its dry-pack opening discussion refers to MSL-related floor life. This evidence applies within the captured guidance for ST's lead-free ECOPACK2 microcontroller and microprocessor packages. It establishes no common timing rule for all components. STMicroelectronics, Soldering recommendations and package information for lead-free ECOPACK2 microcontrollers and microprocessors, AN2639 Rev. 10, July 2026, pages 14–15, sections 6–6.2.
Confirm treatment applicability before choosing a method
A previous baking record is an assessment input, not proof of appropriate or successful treatment. Request the applicable device guidance, package construction and dimensions, carrier identification and documented limits, material and thermal limits, proposed settings and execution evidence. The project must designate who confirms these inputs and the final disposition.
TI states that drying conditions depend on package thickness, MSL and baking temperature. Its reference-table qualifications also address exposure and package construction. NXP says that tray temperature ratings must not be exceeded during baking and that tape-and-reel carriers are not designed for high-temperature baking within its covered guidance. Neither source verifies your carrier's rating or authorizes a project setting. Texas Instruments, SNOA550H, pages 8–9, section 7 and Table 5 Notes 1–5; NXP, AN1902, pages 42–43, sections 10.4.1–10.4.2.
The following independently reusable matrix separates supplier facts from our evidence-preparation recommendations. Its three states can coexist across different rows.

The three recommended states describe different evidence questions: evidence ready to submit for assessment, records needing supplementation, and a treatment method needing confirmation. They can coexist across rows. The suppliers do not prescribe this unified matrix or a universal pause rule. The actual project must designate responsibility for applicability, history reconciliation, method confirmation and disposition.
Keep each supplier's guidance attached to its products and revision. Texas Instruments' drying qualifications include a worst-case molded-leadframe basis, evidence needed for technically justified departures, potentially longer drying after higher-humidity exposure, thickness-dependent exceptions, large ball-grid-array package diffusion-path distinctions, and blocking-plane or stacked-die restrictions. No reference-table value is adopted here as a procedure. STMicroelectronics' atmosphere and carrier arrangements and NXP's component-removal rework guidance address their own situations; they cannot be combined with those drying references into one method. STMicroelectronics' optimal-results timing advice does not replace another manufacturer's label-related floor life. Unopened shelf-life guidance is not substituted for opening-to-final-reflow floor life.
This matrix establishes no numerical exposure limit, baking setting, cumulative timing algorithm, storage credit, resealing reset, dry-storage conversion or successful-treatment result. Actual labels, history, current device documents, carrier ratings, material and thermal limits, execution results and release authority remain project inputs to confirm. Original applicable standard texts and editions have not been verified here; obtain them and confirm applicability before asserting a normative method, numerical acceptance requirement or conformity. Shared standards references do not provide three independent verifications of a standard. Captured revisions do not guarantee future currency, and no equivalence with another STMicroelectronics document path or revision is asserted.
Method: organize the cited supplier relationships into identification, history and treatment questions; connect each question to requested evidence, a gap response and a project responsibility interface. Separate supplier facts from recommendations and preserve product-specific qualifications. No customer records, factory measurements or executed treatment trials underpin this matrix, and it claims no particular Huitai equipment or handling capability. Third-party documents are cited rather than reproduced.

Customer submission and responsibility
Use the matrix to prepare three useful engineering decisions: whether the material and documents are matched, which history records need supplementation, and which treatment questions require confirmation. Name the requested contributor for each gap and agree who assesses applicability, reconciles conflicting records, confirms the method and decides final disposition. This article assigns none of those actual project roles.
Huitai PCB's one-stop PCBA manufacturing positioning, not a trading middleman, provides the manufacturing handoff perspective. For a project discussion, contact Huitai PCB with the identification, history and handling documents and the unresolved questions. Preparing that submission establishes no particular equipment, handling service or executed process.
Conditions and limits
The matrix retains the substantive supplier qualifications and unresolved project inputs for independent reuse. Apply the same boundaries to the surrounding article: captured revisions are dated evidence, not a guarantee of future currency or present applicability. Current product documents and accessible original standards become necessary dependencies before selecting a normative method, numerical acceptance requirement or conformity claim. No such requirement or result is asserted here. Supplier guidance and editorial evaluation do not replace project engineering sign-off or production approval.
FAQ
Are complete records enough to release components into production?
No. Complete, matched records support submission for assessment. The designated project authority still needs to confirm applicability, any treatment requirements and final disposition. The matrix is editorial advice, not a qualification or release rule.
Does resealing a bag reset the exposure history?
This article establishes no resealing reset or cumulative timing algorithm. As an engineering recommendation, retain every opening, exposure and storage period and ask the responsible party to assess that history against applicable device guidance.
Can a previous baking record establish readiness for reflow?
A previous baking record alone does not establish appropriate or successful treatment. Request the applicable method, package and carrier limits and execution evidence before project assessment. TI's drying conditions and NXP's carrier guidance remain supplier-specific.
Can the supplier examples be combined into one baking recipe?
No universal recipe is established by this evidence. Keep TI, NXP and ST guidance within its product and process context and confirm applicable original requirements before selecting a project method.
